The number of choices in sunglasses can be a bit bewildering, and prices for frames range from $30 to $300. Here are tips on selecting glasses for specific sports:
- Brown and green lenses are good for enhancing true color, so they’re suited to such sports as tennis and golf, where it’s important to keep your eye on the ball.
- Polarized lenses eliminate glare and enhance depth perception. They are good to use when driving, and for water sports such as boating or skiing.
- Mirrored lenses, which come in such shades as blue, violet and gold in additon to silver, are useful in bright conditions on water, snow or ice. The lenses reflect light away from the eye, thus less light is transmitted through the lens.
To determine if the lenses are tinted enough, look in the mirror with your sunglasses on. If you can see your eyes, the tint is too light for outdoor sports.
For all types of sunglass wearers, these are the hot shapes:
- Wrap-type frames in spoon, paddle or egg shapes are gaining in popularity. Shields are getting smaller, so they look less like goggles and more like glasses.
- Retro looks, whether it’s the John Lennon oval or more preppy versions, continue to find an audience.
- Oversized Jackie O frames are big with the fashion crowd too.
